Klondike Derby 2007
Both our Webelos Dens braved the snow out at Ensign Ranch to compete in the Aquila District Klondike Derby. The Klondike Derby is a Boy Scout event, but they invite Webelos Scouts to compete in their own category. Scouts re-enact the historic trek to the Klondike by pulling homemade sleds from Skagway to Dawson. En route they encounter problems that require basic Scout skills to overcome.
This year, only a few hardy souls from our Pack stayed overnight on Friday in one of the family cabins at Ensign Ranch. We had a fun time getting our pot belly stove to crank out the heat, and then relaxed for the evening to wake up fresh and ready in the morning. The rest of our crew drove out Saturday morning to join us for registration and some sled practice before the opening meeting.
We spent the day going from station to station competing in the various events including: two man crosscut log sawing, building a fire and cooking a meal, simulating an ice rescue, first aid for shock, hypothermia, and a broken arm, tying eight knots in succession, snowshoe relay racing, racing our sled on a figure eight course, and racing head-to-head with the rest of the Webelos Dens in the Great Klondike Race. We took 1st place in knots and snowshoeing, 2nd in the Great Race, 3rd in log sawing and the figure eight race, and came in 3rd overall!
There is also a video of the Webelos I Den in action, so check it out.
